Description

The Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (SUTEL), established in 1996, is the central regulatory body overseeing Costa Rica's telecommunications sector, ensuring a fair, competitive, and efficient market by establishing and enforcing regulations across various aspects like licensing, tariffs, competition, and consumer protection, while also ensuring the technical compatibility and safety of equipment through type approval (SUTEL certificates) and spectrum management, acting as a mediator in disputes, promoting innovation, and disseminating information to citizens about their rights and obligations regarding telecommunications services and regulations. A SUTEL certificate, a mandatory document issued by SUTEL, signifies that a telecommunications equipment complies with the country's safety and technical standards, essentially allowing it to be legally connected and operated within Costa Rica's public network.
